Post-Surgery Care Instruction

Your journey to reclaim your youthful look needs your whole-hearted cooperation.  Hair restoration is a delicate procedure and your adherence to the following instructions will ensure optimal results.

  1. Please don’t drink alcohol for 72 hours after the procedure. Alcohol thins the blood, may cause bleeding.
  2. Kindly don’t take aspirin or any blood thinners as they may cause bleeding (except when approved by your doctor). Please call the clinic or doctor for any clarifications.
  3. Take your medicines as explained. Eat well before taking medications to avoid nausea and vomiting.
  4. Ensure you wear a surgical cap during the first 14 days post the surgery.
  5. Whenever you are outdoors always wear some loose protection (cap, bandana) on your head for the first 3 weeks post the surgery to avoid exposure to direct sunlight or dust. Wear it over the surgical cap.

Sleeping

Lie down and rest for 2-3 hours post-surgery. When sleeping or resting, lie on your back with two soft pillows under your head in order to maintain your head level your heart.  A good neck support pillow can replace one pillow.  If your wish to sleep sideways, make a conscious effort of changing the side every couple of hours. Avoid sleeping on your stomach for next 5 to 7 days. All these steps will prevent swelling of your face.

Physical Activity

Limit all strenuous activities like dancing, jogging, diving, swimming, weightlifting, vigorous workouts for next 3 weeks.  You can walk briskly or play golf after 7 days. Enjoy your sex-life post 24 hours. Swimming may be resumed after a month of surgery with swimming cap.

Dont Panic

Swelling, numbness, oozing of blood is normal and you need not be alarmed. Discoloration around eyes and on cheeks is common though patients operated at Crown rarely experience it.  Oozing from the grafted area or numbness along the stitch line may happen for the first 72 hours after surgery. Apply light pressure with gauze or handkerchief for two minutes to stop.  It may take few days to few weeks to subside and recover fully.

Nausea / Vomiting

Less than 2% of patients experience nausea due to the medications however this condition doesn’t last long.  In case you feel nauseous kindly call the clinic.

Ingrowing hair

You might notice areas that look like pimples or bumps a few weeks post-surgery. Please do not pick or squeeze them.  Apply a moist warm compress 3-4 times everyday for at least 5 days to help the hair push through the skin surface.  It may take up to 2 weeks for this to clear up.  We see this phenomenon happening in less than 0.1% of our cases.

Scabbing

Scabs will form on your scalp and will fall off naturally over the next few days. You may notice tiny hair stubble in the scabs. While your grafts are intact, there will be the original hair that were transplanted will shed for the first 3 weeks.  After 3 weeks you can gently comb through this region without rubbing against the skin of the scalp. You can resume your normal hair care routine 3 weeks post-surgery or once all your scabs are gone.

The sequel of events after your transplant

Post-surgery you will have a bandage on your head.

Post 48 hours you will have to visit the clinic again.  The bandage will be opened, the scalp cleaned following which you may resume your normal activities. You will be taught how to shampoo too.

The day after the bandage being opened, you can have a head bath with water and a paraben-free sulphate-free shampoo by the following method:

  1. Lather up the shampoo on the palm of your hands
  2. Pat this shampoo on transplanted area gently (dont rub horizontally, vertically or in circular motions
  3. Leave it for 1 to 2 minutes
  4. Rinse-it off gently with a 15 to 20 mugs of water or you may use a gentle hand shower
  5. Avoid using the regular shower or forcefully throwing water on the transplanted area
  6. Pat dry the stitch line and donor area gently with a clean handkerchief
  7. Kindly do not rub the implanted follicles for 12 days
  8. Post 12 days for shampoo the scalp gently without applying too much pressure
  9. A mild conditioner can be used once hair are long enough (3 to 4 months post the hair transplant)

 Minoxidil

You can resume application of topical minoxidil after 12 days post-surgery Kindly apply it onto the dry scalp, as explained to you by the doctor.

Cut & Dye

Please do not color your hair or crop them for at least 3 to 4 weeks post-surgery.  Kindly do not cut any of the  transplanted hair for a period of 4 to 6 months from the date of the surgery.  The rest of hair may be trimmed after 2 months of surgery.

Sutures

The stitches are dissolvable and will disappear in 3 to 4 weeks. The knots in the corners of the stitch line may be visible for this duration. Kindly do not cut or tamper them.
